Observational analysis reveals that FA changes correlate with recovery in peripheral nerve injuries, suggesting reliable biomarkers for repair.
Motivation: Currently, there are no reliable, non-invasive biomarkers capable to early identify repair of severe peripheral nerve injuries cases that require additional surgical intervention Goal(s): FA monitors clinical axonal regeneration after surgical repair of traumatic peripheral nerve injuries. Approach: A novel mathematical model to identify and characterize multiple sections based on slice-wise FA values of the sciatic nerve following nerve repair provided an automated and consistent approach to identify cases that require surgical inventions. Results: Sections in close to the injury show higher correlation values (R2 = 0.713; p <0.001) with behavioral results than any other section of the distal region. Impact: FA close to the injury site shows great potential as a reliable biomarker for assessing nerve injury and postoperative recovery.
