Clinical case report shows improvement in sleep disorders in a patient with Parkinson's disease, suggesting PBM therapy's potential effectiveness.
Introduction: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a complementary or alternative therapy that in this study aimed to evaluate and raise the therapeutic hypothesis of the use of PBM as an effective therapy in patients with sleep disorders (SD), bringing a broad approach involving other pathologies overlapping this pathology. Methods: We present a clinical case of a patient with Parkinson's disease (PD) with a complaint of sleep disorder. The proposed treatment is the use of PBM with intraoral application using an innovative dosimetry and an innovative anatomical application site. SD was evaluated using an adapted analog scale. Results: In the evaluation performed after the last session, there was an improvement in the sleep disorder compared to the pre-treatment evaluation. However, one month after the end of treatment, it was observed that the quality of sleep remained practically the same. Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that PBM can become an innovative therapy for the treatment of sleep disorders (SD). Longitudinal, controlled and randomized clinical studies should be carried out to corroborate the evidence observed in this case report.
