This study demonstrates how cutting edge preparation influences tool wear in cemented carbide mills, highlighting abrasive media effects.
Abstract Cutting edge preparation by drag finishing is used to refine microgeometry and extend tool life, especially when machining difficult-to-cut materials. This study investigates the influence of different abrasive media in drag finishing on the cutting edge microgeometry and wear behavior of cemented carbide end mills during milling of two steels, AISI P20 and SAE 4140. The objective is to understand the effects of abrasive media and contribute to the development of alternative solutions. The results showed that, in general, tools with edge preparation exhibit longer tool life compared to unprepared (sharpened) tools. The alternative ZR medium proposed in this work proved to be a viable option for the drag finishing process.
