Systematic review analyzes effects of short-term rentals on hotel performance and employment in tourism, suggesting potential revenue gaps.
This chapter provides a review of the quantitative empirical literature on the economic impact of short-term rentals (STRs) accommodation on tourist destinations. The review identifies three main research themes relating to hotel industry performance, tourism industry employment, and housing prices and rents and reveals a consensus on the effects of the latter two themes. In addition, a framework for research on the impact of STRs is provided, particularly regarding the investigation of its effect on hotel industry performance. The review also reveals gaps in the literature regarding the effect of increased compliance on government revenue and STRs market growth.
