This model integrates adaptive public lighting with video surveillance in urban areas, indicating potential improvements in energy efficiency and urban safety.
Public lighting plays a fundamental role in urban organization, ensuring security, mobility, and the quality of life for citizens. However, traditional public lighting systems, based on discharge lamps, are associated with high energy consumption, elevated operational costs, and environmental impact, demanding the adoption of more sustainable and efficient solutions. The transition to smart public lighting systems is, therefore, a crucial step towards increasing energy efficiency, sustainability, and optimized urban management. This study explores emerging technologies such as high-efficiency LED lamps, intelligent sensors, and the Internet of Things (IoT), which enable advanced automation, real-time monitoring, and adaptive lighting control based on environmental conditions and urban demand. These technologies significantly contribute to energy savings, the consequent reduction of CO 2 emissions, and improved public safety. Additionally, smart public lighting can be integrated with other urban infrastructures, such as environmental monitoring sensors, security systems, and telecommunications networks. Given this scenario, this paper proposes the implementation of an adaptive public lighting model integrated with video surveillance for urban security in strategic areas of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. The proposed system leverages existing infrastructure, ensuring a cost-effective and scalable solution. This research details the technologies involved, expected benefits in terms of energy efficiency and security, and implementation feasibility. The results demonstrate the technical and economic viability of the proposed solution, its potential to transform urban spaces, and its alignment with smart, safe, and sustainable city development goals.
