Experimental evaluation of basalt fiber content on mechanical and thermal properties in composites.
Basalt fibers (BF) filled polyphenylene oxide (PPO) composites were fabricated by using the twin screw extruder. The effect of BF content on the rheology and thermal and mechanical properties was evaluated. With the increasing BF content, the density, Vicat softening temperature, tensile strength and flexural performance showed some increase, while the tensile elongation decreased. Compared with glass fibers (GF) filled PPO composites, poor interaction of BF with the base resin led to worse mechanical performance and lower melt viscosity.
