This research shows improved power-speed range in an asymmetrical motor, suggesting a practical upgrade for high-speed applications.
This work proposes an optimization methodology for an asymmetrical 8/6 switched reluctance motor (SRM) topology that enhances high-speed performance by expanding the constant power-speed region. The method modifies stator pole spans and phase winding turns in orthogonal pairs, while keeping total copper volume, motor dimensions, and converter loading unchanged. A differential evolution-based algorithm jointly tunes geometry and control parameters such as current references and switching angles. Simulations validate that the asymmetrical drive achieves a 25.6% extension of the constant power range compared to a standard symmetrical 8/6 SRM, without increasing VA demand, thereby offering a practical upgrade for drives targeting extended high-speed operation.
