Analysis assesses benefits of green corridors for biodiversity and air purification in Belgrade, suggesting urban planning enhancements.
The largest part of the Belgrade settlement territory is occupied by construction land, road and railway infrastructure, the rivers Sava and Danube with their tributaries, temporary agricultural areas, areas reserved for communal services and communal infrastructure, protection zone of water sources and green areas. Insufficient afforestation of certain municipalities or parts of municipalities within the boundaries of the Belgrade settlement has caused a large number of planning and strategic documents in the field of greenery management, as well as the potential formation of green corridors. Realization of green corridors aims to increase green areas as a factor of creating better conditions for living in the city (reduction of the city's "heat island", air purification, spaces for the use of local residents), but also for biodiversity protection, animal migration routes, etc. The subject of the paper is the analysis of green corridors within the Belgrade settlement territory and the analysis of the causal consequences due to the lack of planning documentation and the lack of implementation of existing planning documents, as well as the analysis of overambitious solutions. The task is to determine the possibilities and limitations for the development of green corridors through the analysis of planning documents and the determination of the current state by field research. The aim of the research is to determine guidelines and proposals for better management of green corridors in realistic and precisely defined frameworks for the development of the city of Belgrade.
