Abstract Recently returned from a tour of European forest regions, the author writes of his observations. He reports that silvicultural methods are profoundly affected by local economic conditions and that systems of pure stands, once considered best and widely copied in this country, have proven to be injurious to forest soils. He also found that chesp timber imported from America and other countries, makes the cntting of some forests unprofitable.
