Spectroscopic monitoring detects long-period variations in Balmer decrement in γ Cas and π Aqr, suggesting disk dynamics.
γ Cas and π Aqr are classical Be stars and Be/white dwarf binary candidates. We conducted low-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring observations of these two objects. As a result, we detected signs of long-period variations in the Balmer decrement (F(Hα) /F (Hβ), D34), which is an indicator of the effective temperature of the disk. Analysis of medium-dispersion spectroscopic data obtained during the same observation period revealed significant variations in the emission line profiles of π Aqr. This suggests that the disk density and effective temperature may have changed significantly over the past decade or so, but a model is needed for quantitative evaluation.
