Abstract Experimental plantations of exotic or non-indigenous tree species always abound with interest. Occasionally too, an important find is made as for example the growth of the Monterey pine in New Zealand and Australia, and the growth of the Douglas fir in certain parts of Europe. For some years studies have been made at the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station of the growth possibilities of various trees. The present paper reports the behavior of ponderosa pine under various forest conditions in northern Minnesota. The results indicate that this species is not suited to the region.
