Abstract Control of the utilization of range forage is one of the most important steps in range management. There is demand for more reliable means of determining utilization than the rule-of-thumb methods frequently used. The method presented herewith employs measurement of height of grasses selected through systematic sampling. Measurements of grazed stubble heights are translated into percentage of weight utilized, by means of a special utilization gauge. This paper reports the original development of the method in Region 1.
