Study reveals root system characteristics of red pine saplings in plantations and second growth stands, highlighting their importance for reforestation.
Red pine ( Pinus resinosa Ait. ) is one of the more important species of pines occurring in the Lake States region and has been widely used for reforestation. A more complete knowledge of the root system of this species, especially with reference to its development in plantations and second growth stands, is needed. The study here reported describes the root systems of several red pine saplings growing on two different sites.
