Assessment demonstrates that higher β-stabilization in titanium alloys reduces nitriding efficiency, suggesting need for improved processing techniques.
Assessment of the efficiency of gas nitriding of two-phase titanium alloys was carried out using metallographic, XRD and durometric analyses. It was shown that the higher β-stabilization coefficient in the alloy, the lower the intensity of nitride formation and gas saturation during nitriding. It was shown that the lowest nitriding efficiency corresponded to ВТ22 high-alloyed titanium alloy with the highest β-stabilization coefficient. The main technological (thermal cycling) and structural (preliminary deformation or laser treatment) approaches to their increasing the nitriding efficiency are analyzed.
