This investigation reveals how hot pressing affects the hardness and density of high-speed steel powder mixtures, suggesting improved material properties.
The problems of high-speed steel production are discussed and an alternative to the traditional sprayed powder - a powder mixture with an additive of a diffusion-alloyed mixture, obtained from the feedstock of tungsten, molybdenum and cobalt on iron powder by reduction in hydrogen, is proposed. Mixing the resulting mixture with powders of elements that make up the R6M5K5 high-speed steel in a planetary centrifugal mill led to the formation of lamellar particles, the mixture had a monofractional granulometric composition in the range of 0.1-100 microns. After that, cold pressing was carried out with further sintering, and hot pressing of the mixture, during which a structure was formed with dispersed inclusions of carbides and a phase, presumably based on ferrovanadium and an iron matrix with alloying elements dissolved in it. The hot pressing density was 7.07 g / cm3 and the hardness was 63.1 HRA.
