This analysis shows how varying pulse durations affect coating structure and electrochemical properties in magnesium alloys, suggesting improved energy efficiency.
The issue of changing the structure of the protective coating formed on the casting magnesium alloy ML5 by the method of plasma electrolytic oxidation is discussed. The main factor affecting the structure of the coating was a duration of the polishing pulses from 50 μs to 250 μs. The study of protective coatings on magnesium alloy samples was carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, optical and scanning electron microscopy, as well as by X-ray diffractometry for analyzing the phase composition. Varying the duration of the polarizing anodic and cathodic pulses made possible to change the amplitude value of current density, which ensured the production of PEO coatings with a denser structure. It was found out that with a pulse duration of 50 μs, it is possible to reduce the consumption of electrical energy, while the dielectric properties of the coating increase.
