Ground penetrating radar reveals structural characteristics of bridges, suggesting effective monitoring methods.
The article provides basic information on ground penetrating radar and the operation of measuring equipment. The principle of ground penetrating radar is that electromagnetic pulses emitted by the transmitting antenna of the ground penetrating radar propagate in subsurface deposits and, if they encounter sections of the medium with different electromagnetic properties, are reflected from them, return to the antenna unit and are recorded by the receiving antenna. The article presents the results of a ground penetrating radar survey of the bridge on the A-133 highway. The studies were carried out using shielded antenna units operating at central frequencies of 500 and 900 MHz in continuous pro-filing mode. As a result of the ground penetrating radar survey of the bridge, the characteristics of its structural elements were determined; no air cavities were found under the concrete slabs, and no de-formation manifestations were detected in the structure. A conclusion was made on the functional purpose of the bridge in its current state
