This analysis explores the conceptualization of Other in M. Montaigne's work, revealing its axiological value and cognitive implications.
The study aims to model the axiological system of the reflexive discourse’s subject in “Essais” (=“Essays”) by M. Montaigne. The concept of OTHER (AUTRE) is constructed using the linguistic axiological analysis of precedent personalities representation. The relevance of studying the conceptualization of Other is associated with the interpretation of the binomial “Me – Other” as a basic cognitive category of otherness. The study argues 157 that the key parameter of reflective discourse is its axiological value focusing on subjectivization and evaluation of the object and on the transformation of the concept. The edition published in Bordeaux Province in 1588 and uploaded in the MonLOE corpora (MONtaigne à L'OEuvre) was chosen as material for the study. Minimal text tokens including the axiological features of the concept OTHER were selected for the study. They were of various sizes: oneword / twoword appositive / attributive / multiword nominations, microtexts. It was discovered that the concept of OTHER is based on the reconstruction and reevaluation of historical precedent personalities from the position of profiling subjective ameliorative, mixed and pejorative features. Such linguistical axiological elements as indirect descriptive and evaluative nominations, periphrasis, axiologically marked nominations, and verbal portraitsmicrotexts highlighted the traits of a precedent personality. The analysis enabled to restore the androcentric values / antivalues of M. Montaigne presented in the structure of the author’s axiological system in the dichotomy VERTU / VICE.
