This research demonstrates the conversion of leather waste into activated carbon catalysts for H2S removal, highlighting their efficiency and future implications.
In this manuscript, we report the conversion of leather footwear wastes into added-value activated carbon materials with excellent properties for the catalytic decomposition of H2S. The breakthrough capacity at saturation for the synthesized samples reaches values as high as 450 mg/g, and breakthrough times above 25 h under industrially relevant conditions, i.e., 800 ppm of H2S in the presence of oxygen and moisture (RH 60%). The excellent performance achieved is attributed to the presence of a highly developed microporous structure with highly dispersed Cr (III) nanoparticles. These results constitute a step-stone in the valorization of footwear residues into value-added catalysts, with the associated value for the circular economy in this important industrial sector.
