Hybrid RANS/LES simulation reveals flow field loss mechanisms in turbine blades, indicating design challenges.
The trailing edge thickness of turbine blades has a significant impact on the flow field loss. With increasing trailing edge thickness, the unsteady flow structures complicates and significant amount of loss is generated, which cannot be accurately predicted with RANS model. Therefore, high-precision numerical simulation of the wake zone is very important for thick trailing edge blades. In this work, hybrid RANS/LES simulation is conducted for a blade profile specially designed for ceramic matrix composite blade, for which thick trailing edge is unavoidable. The unsteady phenomena such as vortex shedding in the wake zone of the thick trailing edge HPT blade and pressure waves are studied. The development and loss mechanism of the wake vortex is revealed. The POD method is used for modal analysis of the flow field, and the flow field loss is evaluated.
