Prototype water Cherenkov detector enhances gamma-ray astronomy, monitoring sources like blazars and GRBs.
We have built a 100 m² prototype stereoscopic water Cherenkov detector array (SWCDA) in the in 2024, which will be used for gamma-ray astronomy observations in the 100 GeV-10 TeV energy range. In this paper, we describe the design of the Tibet stereoscopic water Cherenkov detector and detailed Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate the performance and sensitivity of the high-altitude stereoscopic water Cherenkov detector. The scientific objectives of SWCDA include wide FOV monitoring of the high-energy gamma-ray sky from 100 GeV to 100 TeV for blazars, active galactic nuclei (AGNs), gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and Galactic microquasars, etc.
