Empirical analysis shows population agglomeration boosts high-tech exports in enterprises, highlighting the role of environmental regulation.
This paper utilizes enterprise-level data from China to investigate the impact of population agglomeration on the export of high-tech products by enterprises, while also exploring the moderating role of environmental regulation in this relationship. The empirical results indicate that population agglomeration significantly promotes the export of high-tech products, undergoing a series of robustness checks. Heterogeneity test reveals that the positive effect of population agglomeration on high-tech product exports is more pronounced among small enterprises, technology-intensive enterprises, non-state-owned enterprises, and enterprises located in eastern cities. Population agglomeration enhances high-tech product exports by influencing technological innovation and diversifying export destinations. Additionally, environmental regulations in various cities contribute to strengthening the positive impact of population agglomeration on high-tech product exports. This paper offers relevant policy recommendations for promoting high-quality trade development from the perspectives of population agglomeration.
