Analysis reveals Mulan (2020) fosters pan-Chinese filial nationalism in viewers, suggesting cultural links between Disney and China's media strategy.
We contend that the movie Mulan (2020), collaboratively produced by Disney and the Chinese culture industry, promotes pan-Chinese filial nationalism in President Xi's era. Our analysis describes ways in which Mulan (2020) functions as a vehicle for a prototype of the pan-Chinese filial nationalist, who is loyal not only to the family but also to the state. Contextualized within the relationship between Disney and China, Mulan (2020) represents Mulan as a brave warrior dedicated to rejuvenating the Chinese nation and a true subject of the pan-Chinese myth. This study extends the understanding of global nationalistic discourse within the changing global media landscape.
