Review highlights efficient C─C and C─X bond formations using a green catalytic system in organic synthesis.
The pursuit of sustainable and efficient methodologies for C─C and C─X bond formations, as well as other complex functionalizations, remains a fundamental goal in modern organic chemistry. In recent years, potassium persulfate (K 2 S 2 O 8 ) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) catalytic system has attracted considerable attention owing to its environmentally benign nature, high efficiency, affordability, and mild reaction conditions. This catalytic combination has been effectively employed in a wide range of transformations, including cyclization, C─C/C─X coupling, oxygenation, and deoxygenation reactions, etc. These successes have firmly established K 2 S 2 O 8 /DMSO as a green, efficient, and versatile system for organic transformations. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments utilizing this catalytic system, mechanistic insights, synthetic applications, and outlining future directions. With this, it aims to serve as a key resource for further development to more sustainable approaches in modern organic synthetic chemistry.
