Study demonstrates the ability of acrylic acid-methyl acrylate hydrogels to remove copper ions in varying environments, suggesting effectiveness in water purification.
In this study, stimuli-sensitive hydrogels based on acrylic acid (AA) and methyl acrylate (MA) were synthesized using the radical copolymerization method. The effect of temperature on the swelling of the hydrogels at different pH values was studied, and their sorption properties were analyzed. The features of complexation of AA-MA hydrogels with copper (II) ions were also considered. To study the release of copper ions from the hydrogel, [hydrogel/copper ion] complexes were obtained at different copper concentrations. Desorption of copper (II) ions from the complex was studied at three different pH values (pH = 4, 7, 9) taking into account the conformational changes in the hydrogel. The desorption rate and amplitude were higher in acidic and alkaline environments compared to neutral environments, which was found to be associated with an increase in the hydrogel volume and an increase in the concentration of copper (II) ions in the solution.
