This analysis proposes a blueberry futures contract to manage price volatility in China's agricultural sector, suggesting improvements in market integrity.
As the worlds largest blueberry producer, Chinas fast-expanding horticultural sector grapples with major price volatility due to rapid output growth, seasonal supply shocks and logistical issuesposing huge financial risks to supply chain stakeholders like producers and processors. This paper proposes a physically-settled blueberry futures contract as a dedicated tool for price risk management. Its methodology includes analyzing Chinas blueberry spot market dynamics, reviewing precedents in perishable commodity futures markets, and applying academic frameworks for contract success. It also details market-tailored optimal contract specs (covering quality, grade, delivery and standardization) to ensure fungibility and market integrity. The paper concludes that despite challenges (high perishability, limited historical price data, need for initial liquidity), the marketlarge, active cash market with obvious price volatility and clear hedging demandprovides a solid foundation for the contracts viability. A successful blueberry futures contract would boost price discovery and stability, and drive the maturation of Chinas agricultural markets.
