This analysis explores care policies in four Latin American countries, highlighting differences and commonalities in public policy approaches.
Care policies have been crucial in Latin America, especially with the rise of ‘new left’ governments since 2020. Despite a shared focus on care, important differences exist in how various countries address this issue as a matter of public policy. This study provides an in-depth analysis of Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay, aiming to identify the common elements of the regional care agenda and each country’s distinct approach. I contend that the variations among these nations can be traced back to the institutional legacies of their social welfare systems and the socio-political cleavages of each context.
