New optical system enables dynamic steering of virtual images using gaze-tracking technology, suggesting improved AR experiences.
We propose a novel optical system that enables eye gaze-dependent dynamic steering of the virtual image in a waveguide-type augmented reality near-eye display. The key component of this architecture is a pair of liquid crystal-based active beam deflectors, which can dynamically redirect incident light at specific angles under voltage control. In the proposed design, the beam deflector positioned on the eye side steers the virtual image according to the eyeball rotation. Meanwhile, the deflector positioned on the world side compensates for the distortion of external light caused by the eye-side deflector, thereby presenting an undistorted see-through view of the real environment.
