Molecular analysis identifies downy mildew in diverse grape cultivars in Korea, suggesting cultivar resistance evaluation is crucial.
Grapevine downy mildew poses a major threat to viticulture worldwide. In 2018 and 2023, symptomatic leaves were collected from Vitis cultivars, interspecific hybrids, and breeding lines in Korea. Morphological investigation and DNA sequence analysis of actin and cytochrome c oxidase II genes identified the causal pathogen as Plasmopara viticola, with phylogenetic analyses placing all specimens within the widespread clade aestivalis. These results provide the first verification of P. viticola clade aestivalis on diverse grape genotypes in Korea and highlights the need for cultivar resistance evaluation and effective disease management.
