Pilot study reveals significant improvement in preceptor microskills through an educational intervention, suggesting the OMP model enhances confidence levels.
Background: Post-pandemic staffing challenges require innovative approaches to rapidly train novice preceptors. Method: The One-Minute Preceptor (OMP) model incorporates five microskills that facilitate the clinical teaching of orientees by preceptors. This study employed a pretest-posttest survey design to evaluate preceptor skills, self-evaluation, confidence levels, and the orientee's assessment of the preceptor before and after an educational intervention. Results: The paired t test results from the orientee's survey indicated a statistically significant improvement in the preceptor's microskills following the intervention. Conclusion: The OMP model may be an effective tool for training novice preceptors, yet more robust study designs are necessary to further validate this model.
