This analysis reveals preferred christmas tree species for growers, suggesting specific qualities and care requirements.
Choice of Christmas tree species is up to buyer and grower. Scotch pine, although it departs some from the traditional concept of a Christmas tree, is among the easiest to grow and shape into a top quality product. Douglas-fir meets most buyers' desires and is moderately easy to grow; research is making it easier every year. Norway and white spruces find good markets if cut fresh so that they retain needles, and probably need the least care (on good sites) to become well-shaped trees. Balsam, Fraser, white, grand, and California red firs always find good markets for the skillful grower who can put in a little extra care each step.
