Analysis compares X-ray imaging and dissection for detecting beetles in bark samples, suggesting similar accuracy.
A method of sampling southern pine beetles within bark samples by X-rays is presented. Beetle images on radiographs of bark samples were counted and the results compared with the number of beetles found by dissection of the same samples. Analysis of the data demonstrates approximately equal accuracy for X-ray and dissection methods; the X-ray method was the more rapid and least expensive approach.
