This article demonstrates the evolution of the hell-hunting motif, highlighting its impact on narrative forms in medieval literature.
The article shows the transformation of medieval exempla based on the motif of Òhell-huntingÓ in BoccaccioÕs novella (Decameron V, 8). The sermon tradition of depicting the afterlife punishment for female adultery was complemented in the Middle Ages by a series of courtly texts describing punishments for women who were cruel to lovers during their lives. By combining elements of both narrative traditions and adding references to DanteÕs Comedy, Boccaccio constructs a complex system of allusions that shifts ecclesiastical didacticism into the secular register of literary play.
