Abstract On many dry sites of the lower Piedmont, loblolly pine seedlings become established under a wide range of overwood densities. The growth pattern of this advance reproduction is affected by overwood densities and seedling ages, and these effects continue for 1 to 3 years following removal of the pine overwood. Thereafter, height growth of advance reproduction progressively improves until near normal growth is attained in 4 to 5 years for stands which had less than 60 square feet basal area, and in 6 to 7 years for stands which initially had more than 60 square feet.
