Ecological classification improves land management practices and reliability in northern Rocky Mountain forests.
Ecological classification based on vegetation, used by foresters in the northern Rocky Mountain region and elsewhere, offers a strong land management tool. It expands knowledge about the forest and range, and is useful for estimating productive potential. Resulting maps of habitat types aid in application of land management practices with due regard for environmental situations. Where habitat information is available and silvicultural and mensurational information are correlated with habitat types, management prescriptions should increase in reliability.
