In this work, laboratory tests were carried out to evaluate the allelopathic effect of seed and glume extracts of Avena sterilis L. on root growth during the germination stages of a durum wheat landrace (MBB). A stimulating effect was observed on root number, where the maximum average number (4.91) was recorded with the 25% and 50% concentrations of powder extract. On the other hand, seed and glume extracts showed an inhibitory effect on root length at all concentrations. A minimum root length (5.17cm) was noted at the 25% concentration of the glume extract, while the lowest length (3.08cm) was recorded with the powder extract under the concentration (100%). The length of the first leaf was negatively affected by the powder extract, particularly at high concentrations (75%) and (100%), where the growth was inhibited and the first leaf was shriveled. The number of seminal roots, was relatively advantaged by all types of extracts which could be a new avenue of research at the biochemical and cytological levels.
