Abstract The spatial distribution of high-level athletes is one of the important indicators for judging the development of regional competitive sports. In this study, the regional distribution characteristics of high-level athletes and their influencing mechanisms in 31 provinces in mainland China were analyzed using GIS and QCA methods. The results show that: (1) there is a significant imbalance in the distribution of high-level athletes in different regions, showing a distribution pattern of more in the east and less in the west, dense along the coast and sparse in the inland; (2) there is a positive spatial correlation in the distribution, which shows the complexity of imbalance and dynamic adjustment, and maintains the overall pattern of low-level imbalance; (3) there are four types of paths contributing to the phenomenon of regional agglomeration, which belong to the categories of "technology-environment type" and "technology-environment type", which include core conditions such as investment in science and technology innovation, coaching resources, regional economic strength, and social sports organizations, and specific combinations of auxiliary conditions such as sports events, sports reserve talents, and professional sports development. The study shows that coaching resources are the core factor in all groupings.
