In this research, the relationship between the increase in visceral fat and academic performance in university students will be considered. According to the cognitive paradigm, for learning to be achieved, the functions of the intellect are essential, as well as personal traits such as self-concept, motivation, self-control and locus control. On the other hand, the increase in visceral fat triggers an inflammatory cascade that accesses the central nervous system, progressively damaging the structure of the neuron, with a high risk of affecting its natural processes. The objective of the study was to demonstrate the relationship between increased visceral fat and poor academic performance in medical students. The methodology used in this research was quantitative, a sample of 302 students who were studying the subject of Physiology and Fundamentals of Neurosciences of the Faculty of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara was recruited, a bioelectrical impedance was performed on them and their grades were collected. finals. This is a cross-sectional study with a descriptive multiple regression analysis technique. Of the sample, 145 students were of normal weight with a regular level of grades, 93 students with excess visceral fat were detected with almost homogeneous grades, the relationship between visceral fat and low academic performance was not determined. Conclusion, in this research, normal weight students with regular grades predominate. A low number of students with excess visceral fat were found, but their academic performance is homogeneous at the three grade levels, so the relationship between increased fat was not demonstrated. visceral with low academic performance. It would be necessary to analyze the serum level of cytokines to confirm the inflammatory state, and to carry out an analysis on the learning and metacognitive strategies that interfere with academic performance at the time of the intervention, later in five years and then in ten years.
