Currently, the Republic of Kazakhstan has established a dedicated working group to develop a comprehensive roadmap for implementing the Strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, as approved by the Presidential Decree № 121 on February 2, 2023. This working group comprises of experts from various sectors, including government officials, environmental scientists, industry representatives, and international consultants. Their collective efforts are focused on creating actionable plans and policies that will ensure the effective implementation of the Strategy. The primary objective of this Strategy is to ensure the sustainable development of Kazakhstan's economy in response to climate change. This ambitious objective requires a multifaceted approach, addressing emissions across all sectors of the economy, accounting methodology, integrating advanced technologies and practices to reduce carbon footprint. The medium-term goal of the Strategy, in line with Kazakhstan's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory, is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030 relative to the 1990 levels (unconditional target) and to achieve a 25% reduction with international support for the decarbonization of the economy (conditional target). To meet these targets, Kazakhstan has updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and enacted a new Environmental Code. This updated NDC reflects the country's commitment to international climate agreements and sets a clear path towards achieving its emissions reduction goals.
