Encountered upon a sandstone bedding plane towards the base of the Early Ediacaran Moorillah Siltstone (middle Brachina sequence) within the central Flinders Ranges, South Australia, are impressions of Aspidella, one with an attached frond. This frondose fossil is readily comparable to fossils within the renowned Ediacara and Nilpena Sandstone Members of the Rawnsley Quartzite (uppermost Neoproterozoic) elsewhere in the ranges, but is estimated to date to ca 620 Ma, thereby pre-dating the Ediacara/Nilpena fossils by some 60 million years.
