Let's shine! The 2'-deoxyguanosine etheno adduct exhibits enhanced emission features with respect to the canonical nucleobase. The peculiar fluorescence arising from two independent species was unveiled by upconversion fluorescence and rationalized by quantum mechanical calculations.
