Arylethynyl-substituted dipyrrolyldiketone BF2 complexes as anion-responsive π-electronic molecules exhibited an enhancement in one-photon absorption and associated two-photon absorption derived from conformation changes upon anion binding. The anion complexes with expanded planar regions assisted by intramolecular interactions resulted in solid-state charge-by-charge ion-pairing assemblies in combination with π-electronic cations.
