This study is based on the concept of visual communication competency as proposed in the 2022 revised Art Education curriculum, focusing on a newly introduced elective course for undergraduate students major-ing in art education at the teachers' college. The aim of this course is to develop students' abilities to crit-ically perceive and communicate within visual culture. By investigating essential theories for fostering visual communication skills and applying them to individual and group creative and critical activities, this research not only enhances the students' own competencies but also suggests necessary elements for educating future students as prospective teachers. First, there is a need for learners to reconceptualize visual literacy and metaphorical thinking based on an understanding of visual culture. Secondly, a systematic curriculum that embodies critical interpretation and creative work within students is required.
