The purpose of the study – to analyze literature data regarding the history of the doctrine formation of the structure and function of the pineal gland. Conclusions. 1. Analysis of the evolution of views on the role of the pineal gland in the regulation of body functions demonstrates that the gland has been a constant subject of scientific discussions and philosophical concepts for several centuries. 2. Modern scientific achievements in the study of the biological effects of the products of the gland’s secretory activity testify to the polydromy of their effects and leave no doubt about the significant prospects in the discovery of new mechanisms of their action.
