The consequences of mismanaged medications for the nearly 1.4 million adults in the United States who identify as transgender can be severe. Hormone therapy, pre- or post-gender affirming surgical therapies, and concurrent management of chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension necessitate careful medication oversight. Without tailored care, these individuals are at risk for poor health outcomes and increased health care costs. Pharmacists are in a unique position to provide inclusive, gender-affirming health care to transgender individuals. Comprehensive Medication Management integrates pharmacists into the health care team to ensure medications are appropriate, effective, safe, and able to be taken as intended.
