Policy review advocates mandatory patient education for chronic ailments in India, highlighting its potential to reduce disease burden.
Effective patient education (PE) is fundamentally grounded in the principles of communication, consciousness, and coping (the 3Cs). Comprehensive education for patients with chronic ailments is crucial, as these conditions are lifelong and can significantly impact their quality of life (QoL). It is essential to empower these patients with a thorough understanding of their ailments to enhance their coping mechanisms and mitigate the adverse effects on their QoL. Recent research conducted in India predicts that the prevalence of at least one chronic ailment will reach 142.66 million by 2050. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for the healthcare system to integrate mandatory patient education alongside therapy prescriptions for every patient seeking treatment for chronic ailments. Furthermore, patient education can positively influence disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) among chronic disease patients. Comprehensive education provides patients with a clearer understanding of their disease, potentially reducing the overall burden of their condition. Conclusion: Patient education is pivotal for enhancing the quality of life for those living with chronic ailments. The current research strongly advocates for the education and counselling of patients with chronic conditions. However, the implementation of mandatory patient education, particularly in India, remains an aspirational goal.
