This paper aims to analyze the History and memories that marked the process of tourism development in Rio Grande do Sul from the 1930s to the 1960s. It seeks to identify the beginning of the organization of tourist activity in the State and how it was institutionalized until the elaboration of the Regional Tourism Plan in the 1970s, traying to understand how and through which mechanisms tourism was configured in the State. The analysis was carried out from a historical perspective using bibliographical, documental and oral sources. Studies on the history of tourism in Rio Grande do Sul indicate that the activity is based on references, mainly from Uruguay. What determined tourism in the state in this period were the celebrations of the Farroupilha Centenary; the installation of the Touring Club do Brazil - Section of Rio Grande do Sul; and the Grape Festival held in Caxias do Sul.
