The article discusses the reasons for replacing the Tatar Arabographic alphabet with the Cyrillic alphabet. Based on archival data, the process of changing alphabets with the help of missionaries, government officials, Kazakh educators, and Tatar teachers in Russian educational institutions is traced. The work was written on the basis of archival documents from the Central Archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the State Archives of the Republic of Tatarstan. The main research method is a problem-chronological approach, which made it possible to consider the processes under study in the dynamics of sociocultural processes that took place in the Steppe region. The work may be useful in studying the ethno-confessional policy of the Russian Empire and the mutual influence of the cultures of the Turkic peoples. For citation: Muftakhutdinova D.Sh.
