Smart windows have become increasingly popular due to their ability to provide privacy protection, energy efficiency, and user control. Therefore, this technology has a wide range of applications in various fields such as construction, automotive, aviation, and renewable energy. However, commercialisation faces two significant challenges due to the slow response speed and low transmittance. This work demonstrates a 5CB-doped polymer-stabilised sphere-phase liquid crystal (PS-SPLC) smart window with sub-millisecond response time, which can be switched between transparent and scattering states by an electric field. The transmittance exceeds 90% when the voltage is on in the visible light range. This 5CB-doped PS-SPLC smart window has the potential to usher in a new era of smart window research.
