This article deals with the problem of plastic pollution and the resulting environmental, economic and social impacts. Despite having been an innovation in the industry, the widespread use and improper disposal of plastic has triggered alarming environmental problems. In this respect, SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production - is highlighted as one of the most relevant for industrial design in solving the challenges faced by humanity. Sustainable design is seen as a very important ally in reducing plastic pollution by proposing innovative and more sustainable solutions. Measures such as promoting responsible consumption, encouraging reuse, recycling and the use of alternative raw materials are discussed throughout the article. In addition, three case studies of organizations working to combat plastic pollution are presented, illustrating the importance of design in this context.
